Program Overview

Lactation research can be fun, exciting, and daunting especially when you need to work with the IRB (Institution Review Board) and complete necessary training. There are several ethical items to consider and additional knowledge one needs to be aware of when getting ready to do lactation research and while working on a research project. These items include knowledge of intellectual property, open access, fair use, public domain, copyright materials, plagiarism, internet access and availability. This presentation will also discuss when permissions need to be obtained while doing lactation research. A brief explanation of the role of the IRB will also be discussed. This presentation ends with a discussion of the implications of not obtaining permission before conducting lactation research.

NLCA 2024 Summer Workshop: Ethically Growing & Protecting Our Profession

The Code: Look What They’re Doing to Compromise Code Compliance

Recorded June 11, 2024

  • Purchase 1 2024 Summer workshop program for $25.
  • Purchase 2 2024 Summer Workshop programs for $40.
  • Purchase all 3 2024 Summer Workshop programs for $50.
  • Discount will be applied at checkout.

Program Overview

This presentation explores the current tactics being used by formula manufacturers to compromise code compliance. Lactation consultants, breast pump companies, and healthcare platforms are being lured into partnerships and affiliations with infant formula manufacturers to market breastmilk substitutes. Parents are enticed to use the services of healthcare platforms that do not present unequivocal support for exclusive breastfeeding. Formula companies use sophisticated techniques and misleading messaging to market their products including scientific language and imagery, pain points, and emotional and aspirational appeals. Combo feeding is being positioned as the normal way to feed an infant. Armoring parents and healthcare providers against these tactics are discussed.

Program Overview

Social media provides community, connection, sharing of knowledge, and access to answers for both ourselves and for parents/families. As lactation professionals, these platforms allow us to have connection with each other and to share education. We agree to and are held accountable by the Scope of Practice and the Code of Professional Conduct by the IBLCE. This applies to in-person interactions, digital communication, and our presence on social media through content we create and comments we share. This presentation highlights the ethics of social media use through considering the why, how, and what we share.
